In 1970, after earning my bachelor’s degree in English literature from Université de Moncton, I left my home province of New Brunswick to pursue a training program in psychopedagogy at Université du Québec in Chicoutimi, with the aim of building a career in teaching English as a second language. I began by teaching in high schools across Quebec and the Maritimes, then moved on to various vocational schools and colleges in Quebec City, including Collège Bart, Centre de formation professionnelle Fierbourg, and Cégep Garneau. Throughout my career, I remained committed to designing engaging activities tailored to each student’s interests and learning pace. As I gained experience, I also took part in assessing students’ English proficiency levels for group placement purposes. My career took a new turn in 2005 when I was hired by Autorité des marchés financiers. It was quite a challenge: I was tasked with setting up and managing the English department at the Quebec City office! Fortunately, the department’s mandate—planning training activities to help employees improve their English skills, while also providing writing, translation, and proofreading services—was perfectly aligned with my skillset. Over the course of my various roles, I had the opportunity to design custom training programs and develop a range of materials to help diverse audiences strengthen their command of business English. It was therefore with immense pleasure that, at the request of Logitell Publishing and in collaboration with Christopher Kolar, I drew on this expertise to co-author a series of textbooks: Interaction en anglais, Communication en anglais (English and bilingual versions), and Communication en anglais des affaires. These textbooks were intended for students in secretarial and accounting vocational training programs, as well as for college students.
Born in Ontario, I studied English literature and psychology at the University of Windsor before moving to Quebec in the mid-1990s to teach English as a second language. I initially taught at various private schools, including Montreal Language Studies, LPS, and Berlitz, before founding my own school, Anglais Idéal, which welcomes anyone wishing to improve their command of the English language. I take pride in offering high-quality lessons—individual or group—that are tailored to each student’s needs and interests. My philosophy? I strive to help every student develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through a variety of engaging activities, all in a fun and supportive environment. My strong background in teaching, combined with my passion for writing, have led me to produce the textbook Let’s Learn Essential English, the seventh edition of which was published in 2018. Building on that experience, I subsequently co-authored several more textbooks with Rachel Leblanc: Interaction en anglais, Communication en anglais (English and bilingual versions) and Communication en anglais des affaires, all published by Éditions Logitell. I am currently working on my first novel, thus reconnecting with my first love.
Fueled by a lifelong passion for languages and raised in a family of teachers, I contemplated the idea of becoming a language teacher throughout my studies. I first earned a DCS in languages from Dawson College, then went on to complete my bachelor’s degree in Language Sciences at Université Laval. Opting to focus on languages and linguistics, and carrying the teenage dream of joining a student exchange program, I spent my second academic year at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. After that, driven by a powerful desire to live my own “Auberge espagnole” (The Spanish Apartment) experience, I surrendered to the call of the old continent and enrolled in the master’s degree in Research in Language and Literature Teaching at the University of Barcelona. Through this program, I discovered the concept of intercomprehension, which completely fascinated me. I chose to focus my final project on this subject, specifically exploring how knowledge of one’s native language can serve as a tool for learning a second language. After completing my studies, I wanted to put all these skills and knowledge into practice. I had the opportunity to do so by teaching French in Brazil during a five-month internship. This experience was both formative and disruptive. In fact, I realized that the day-to-day management involved in teaching was simply not for me: I was constantly doubting myself, wondering whether I had done too much preparation for my courses, or too little. Upon my return to Quebec, the idea of working for an academic publisher seemed like the ideal way to combine my interests with a daily routine that suited me perfectly. After a few years of detours, I finally found my true path at Logitell Publishing. Working on the creation of instructional material allows me to make the work of those who are called to teach easier. As for me, I found my calling in the field of educational publishing in 2017, and I have not looked back since. Initially, I worked on creating software textbooks and discovered the joys of collaborating with a team. When the opportunity arose to contribute to writing guides on translation and second language learning, I was more than delighted to put my editorial skills to good use and reconnect with my first love—languages—while being supported by experienced colleagues.
